Trabzonspor’s bid to re-sign Paul Onuachu during the mid-season transfer window has hit a familiar obstacle, with Southampton demanding a hefty €10 million fee for the Nigerian striker.
The 30-year-old spent the second part of last season on loan at Trabzonspor after his move to Southampton from Belgian side Genk failed to yield any positive results.
The Turkish club had previously targeted Onuachu at the start of the season, but talks fell through when Southampton refused to budge on their initial €12 million asking price. Despite Onuachu struggling for game time in the first half of the season, Southampton remains firm on their valuation, according to Turkish media outlet Gunebakis.
Trabzonspor coach Şenol Güneş, eager to bolster his squad with a proven center forward, pushed for the club to reignite their interest in Onuachu. The player reportedly agreed to personal terms, but the transfer talks stalled again when Southampton lowered their demand only slightly to €10 million. Trabzonspor, unwilling to meet that figure, offered €5 million instead, hoping to leverage Onuachu’s desire to leave.
The 29-year-old striker has expressed a strong preference to return to Trabzonspor, rejecting approaches from other Turkish clubs, including Beşiktaş and Göztepe.
Trabzonspor is now exploring alternative transfer options but remains hopeful that Southampton will reduce their demands. If no agreement is reached during the current window, the club is considering signing a pre-contract agreement with Onuachu to secure him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Claret-Blues remain determined to bring Onuachu back to the squad and are counting on the player’s willingness to push for his exit from the English side.
