Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has made an adjustment to his squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, replacing injured Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella with Gent defender Jordan Torunarigha.

Nathan Tella played the full 90 minutes in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 loss to Werder Bremen which preceded their defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, effectively ending their European journey. However, the Nigerian attacker has now sustained a muscle injury, ruling him out for some weeks.

Due to the injury, Jordan Torunarigha has now been called up as the 27-year-old who was initially omitted from the 23-man squad will join the team when the camp opens in Kigali on March 16 as they prepare for the World Cup qualifiers.

Bayer Leverkusen will be disappointed with Nathan Tella’s injury, especially with their star man Florian Wirtz already ruled out. Nonetheless, the international break serves as a crucial opportunity for the German side to recover their injured players, including Tella for the final stretch of the season where they will be hoping to challenge for the title.

On the other hand, Torunarigha has been a consistent performer for Gent this season, playing 33 games across four competitions including the Belgian Pro League, the Belgian Cup and the Conference league. His inclusion is expected to bolster the defense which many supporters had argued was too light.

The Super Eagles will hope to secure victory in both their matches against Rwanda on March 21 and Zimbabwe on March 25, as they seek to avoid consecutive World Cup misses.
