The Lagos State Governor’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Sport Marketing, Onaopepo Adu, brought the spirit of World Basketball Day to life with the just-concluded Island School 3×3 Basketball Tournament.
Two weeks ago, Lagos witnessed an exciting, groundbreaking basketball tournament organized by the SSA and hosted in Greensprings school on the 7th of December, 2024. The tournament was a celebration of basketball’s power to unite and inspire.
In addition to encouraging youth engagement in sports, the competition was designed to identify future basketball stars and promote grassroots basketball growth. Nine schools competed for the top prizes in both the male and female categories and the hosts solidified their standing as a centre for athletic excellence with victory in both categories.
The project, which was in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, demonstrated how basketball can advance equality, education, and peace.
It also inspired young athletes to pursue their goals and use athletics as a means of fostering permanent change and community development.
With the competition, Adu hopes to encourage young people, bring communities together, and promote positive change via the use of basketball.
The Island School 3×3 Tournament’s performance serves as evidence of the value of grassroots sports efforts as Lagos State commemorates World Basketball Day.
