Nigerian freshman Samuel Ogazi of the University of Alabama clocked a personal best of 44.52 seconds to win the silver medal in the men’s 400m event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Ogazi’s time of 44.52s placed him second behind Christopher M. Williams of USC, who won the race in 44.47 seconds. JeVaughn Powell of Arkansas took bronze with 44.54s.
It was Ogazi’s first season competing in the United States after joining the Alabama program.
The 400m final was a closely contested race, with the top three finishers separated by just 0.07 seconds.
Ogazi’s personal best of 44.52s marked a significant improvement for the Nigerian sprinter in his debut collegiate season.
Ogazi had last month qualified for the Olympics, running his first sub-45s time during the SEC Outdoor Championships in Florida, USA.
