Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play Russia in an international friendly on June 6, the Russian Football Union has announced.

The Russian Football Union announced this on its website on Thursday as part of three friendly games they will play during the next FIFA free windows.

Apart from Nigeria, Russia will also play Zambia in March and Belarus on June 10. The time and venue for the friendly games are yet to be fixed.

“The Russian Football Union has reached agreements with the football federations of Zambia, Nigeria, and Belarus to hold friendly matches in the coming FIFA windows. In March, Valery Karpin’s team will play against Zambia. The game will be held in Moscow, with the exact time and location to be announced later.

“On June 6, the Russian national team will play a home match against Nigeria, and on June 10, they will play away against the national team of Belarus. The venues and start times of the matches will be announced later.

“The Zambian national team is ranked 87th in the FIFA rankings. Most of the team’s players compete in foreign leagues, including Spain, Italy, Israel, and Switzerland. Zambia won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. In the last edition of the tournament, the team exited at the group stage.

“The Nigerian national team is ranked 44th in the FIFA rankings. Last year, the team reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost to the tournament hosts, Ivory Coast, with a score of 2-1. The core of the Nigerian national team consists of footballers who play in the leagues of England, Spain, Italy, and Germany. The team’s main star is Victor,” the Russian FA said on its website.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to announce the friendly game.

The announcement of the friendly games with the three nations comes despite Russia’s suspension from international football by world football governing body FIFA.

Both FIFA and UEFA placed Russia under suspension in 2022 after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the ban, Russia have continued to play non-FIFA-recognized friendlies against other nations, facing Belarus, Thailand, Brunei, and Syria between September and November last year.
