Nigeria Premier Football League leaders Enugu Rangers have been slapped with a N5 million fine for breaching league regulations during their crucial match against Enyimba FC on matchday 35.
The incident stemmed from Rangers’ failure to maintain adequate security at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. The stadium also exceeded its designated capacity for the high-stakes title clash against Enyimba.
After a closely contested match, a penalty awarded to Rangers in the 98th minute following a foul on Godwin Obaje ignited controversy. Enyimba players, in protest, walked off the pitch refusing to allow the penalty to be taken.

Unable to contain their emotions, fans from both sides stormed the pitch, resulting in pandemonium and injuries.
Following a thorough review of the incident, the NPFL’s disciplinary committee found Rangers guilty of violating four league frameworks and rules.
As a consequence, Rangers have been fined N5 million for their security lapses and fan misconduct during the match.
The statement in part reads, “Upon review of the findings of the official reports for the Match Day 35 Fixture: Rangers Int’1 FC vs. Enyimba Int’1 FC, held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on 9 June 2024, the Nigeria Premier Football League states its findings as follows:
“You (Rangers) are in breach of Rule B15.24 of the Frameworks and Rules (for over-ticketed which led to the overcrowding at the Stadium. Breach of Rule B13.52 (failure to provide adequate and effective security, breach of Rule B13.52.1(failure to implement adequate and effective crowd control measures. and breach of Rule B13.52’s failure to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to restricted areas.
“Consequently, the NPFL hereby imposes on you the following sanctions: “A fine of two Million Naira only (N2,000,000) for over-ticketing, a fine of One Million Naira only (N1,000,000) for failing to provide adequate security, a fine of One Million Naira only (N1,000,000) for failure to implement effective crowd control measures, a fine of One Million Naira only (N1,000,000) for failure to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to restricted areas.”
In a turn of events, Enugu Rangers have been awarded three points and three goals following Enyimba’s punishment for disrupting the match. This decision extends their lead at the top of the table to four points.
