Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has dismissed the possibility of returning to play in the NPFL, instead expressing his interest in scouting and discovering new talent within the league.
Omeruo revealed his decision not to return to the NPFL during a live X Space session, which he hosted alongside Wilfred Ndidi, Asisat Oshoala, and several prominent journalists from across Nigeria.
Omeruo cited a lack of top-flight clubs in the state where he grew up as a major reason why he would not return to the league: “I don’t think I will come back to play in the NPFL. I grew up in Abuja and they don’t have a club playing in the topflight. And right now, I can’t go back to Akure. I don’t see myself going back to the Nigerian league to play but I’m someone who likes scouting good players.”
He however expressed his passion for scouting talented players from the NPFL, recalling: “There was a time when the league had an app where we could stream games from everywhere and back then I shared it (the link) with my agent and other people because I knew the quality we had in that league.” This experience has fueled his passion for discovering new talent in the league.

Omeruo also shared his post-football aspirations, revealing his dreams to improve the reputation of the NPFL: “After football, what I would like to do is to manage the Nigerian league. I feel like we should be selling players like the Brazilians and not just for a meager fee. I think the league has the quality to sell players for as much as $1 million because of the talent we have in the country.”
To achieve this goal, Omeruo emphasized the importance of increasing the league’s visibility: “The league organizers have to try and make the league visible on TV, by so doing, it will create more awareness,” he said.
Despite Omeruo’s submission, the presence of high-profile Nigerian players like Ahmed Musa and Brown Ideye in the NPFL is likely to inspire other Nigerian international stars to follow suit, which could help boost the league’s popularity and growth.
