Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has expressed confidence in the ability of newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle to make an impact with the team, describing the current setup as an “open trial” for players to prove their worth.
Speaking during an X Space he hosted on Monday, Omeruo said the players are ready to impress Chelle, who was unveiled by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) earlier in the day.
“It’s like an open trial for some of us that have not been playing regularly. We have to show the manager that we deserve a place if invited. Everyone will be serious,” Omeruo said.
The Kasimpasa defender praised Chelle’s tactical organisation, noting that the Malian coach has what it takes to get the best out of Nigeria’s talented squad.
“Judging from the manager and the way the Malians played in the friendly against us and during the AFCON, I saw a team that is organised,” Omeruo said. “I think he has something to give to the team. With the talent we have, I think he won’t have any problem to make us play the way he wants us to play.”
Omeruo also took time to acknowledge former interim coach Austin Eguavoen for rebuilding the team’s confidence after a difficult period.

“Kudos to Austin Eguavoen for the games he handled and for what he did with the team. When he took over, our confidence was a bit low, and now we’ve got our confidence back,” he said.
The veteran defender is optimistic that with Chelle at the helm, the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“When we’re at our best, no country will stand us, and I think we have a big chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Omeruo said
