Shooting Stars’ head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, has urged Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) referees to raise their game, following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Rivers United on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Ogunbote emphasised the need for fairness and higher officiating standards in the league, stating that while referees often face undue criticism, they play a pivotal role in maintaining the NPFL’s credibility.
“Referees often face criticism, but I focus on their challenging role,” Ogunbote wrote. “However, to maintain NPFL’s credibility & acknowledge player dedication, referees must elevate performance. Respect is a 2-way street.”
His remarks come after a disappointing loss for Shooting Stars, but the coach stressed that better officiating could enhance the overall league experience for both players and fans.
“Do better, we can ensure a fair & enjoyable league experience for all,” he added, calling for mutual respect between referees and players to create a more competitive and enjoyable NPFL.
The defeat leaves Ogunbote’s team 16th on the NPFL log with six points after seven matches, one point above bottom-placed Ikorodu City FC and level on point with both Lobi Stars and Bayelsa United in 17th and 18th place respectively.
