Offiong Edem became the third Nigerian to exit the table tennis event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, losing 4-0 to Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi in the women’s singles Round of 64 on Sunday.

Edem joined Quadri Aruna and Olajide Omotayo, who both lost on Saturday and were eliminated from the competition.

While Aruna and Omotayo managed to win at least one set, Takahashi proved too strong for Edem, winning in straight sets: 11-8, 11-4, 13-11, 12-10.

Omotayo began Nigeria’s table tennis exit streak with a 4-1 loss to Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan, despite winning the first set.

Aruna’s situation was even more dramatic as he surrendered a 3-0 lead to lose 4-3 to 19-year-old Romanian Eduard Ionescu.

Nigeria’s last representative in the table tennis event, Fatimo Bello, will compete tomorrow against Jia Nan Yuan in the women’s singles Round of 64 at her debut Olympics.
