Rivers United jumped to second place in the league standings after defeating Katsina United 1-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in their Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) clash which began on Thursday, was suspended due to heavy rainfall and resumed on Friday morning.

The home team took the lead in the 17th minute through a header by John Ubong Friday, which proved to be the decisive goal. Despite the disruption caused by the rain, Rivers United maintained their intensity and discipline to claim all three points.

Prior to the game, Rivers United had been struggling, with only one win in their last eight league matches. In contrast, Katsina United were on a good run, having lost only once in their previous five games. However, Rivers United’s determination and resilience paid off as they secured a crucial victory.

The win propelled Rivers United to second place in the league standings with 42 points from 26 games. They now trail league leaders Remo Stars by nine points. Meanwhile, Katsina United remain 14th with 33 points, five points above the relegation zone.

Although they fell short of achieving a double over Katsina United after a goalless draw in the reverse fixture, Rivers United’s gritty win will serve as a major boost, revitalizing their title ambitions with 12 games still to play.

Rivers United’s next challenge is a crucial match against third-placed Shooting Stars, who are separated from Rivers United only by goal difference. On the other hand, Katsina United will face Akwa United, seeking a victory to increase their cushion above the relegation zone.
