The United States, Ghana, and Nigeria are locked in a battle for the allegiance of talented 18-year-old defender Matai Akinmboni.
The young star, who recently signed a long-term contract with Premier League side Bournemouth, has garnered significant attention after a breakout season with DC United in Major League Soccer.
Akinmboni, a US youth international, has represented the country at the U-19 and U-20 levels. However, he is yet to earn a senior cap for the USMNT. Born to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother, he is eligible to represent all three nations at the international level.
His decision could be influenced by his family ties. He is the nephew of Ghanaian football legend Sammy Kufour, who enjoyed a distinguished career in Europe, including a decade with Bayern Munich.
Bournemouth acquired Akinmboni for a €1.5 million transfer fee, with potential for an additional €1m in add-ons and a 20% sell-on clause for DC United.
Akinmboni is not the only young player facing a similar dilemma. Arsenal academy goalkeeper Khari Ranson, also born to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother, is another prospect who could choose between representing Nigeria or Ghana at the senior level.
