The current president of the Nigerian Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has pledged his support to the development of Women’s football in the country following the Super Falcons 2-1 loss to France at the Raymond-Kopa Stadium, Angers
The game signified the objective of the NFF to organize high-profile matches aimed at developing foreign and home-grown football players in the Super Falcons.
The performance of the younger players was also an evidence of a transitional phase earmarked for the production of talented and exciting footballers to take over from the experienced and older ones. However, the squad balance of both experience and youth is still viewed as a necessity for success.
While they lost the friendly game to France, the Super Falcons won the heart of fans with their solidity in defense bar some mistakes, and their directness in transition. The Blues are ranked as the 10th best team in the world, however, even without key players like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, the Super Falcons still impressed away from home.
Speaking after the game, the NFF president expressed his excitement with the performance of the home-based players: “We saw the discovery of some of our home girls that were introduced into the game and they performed exceptionally well,” he said.
“I must say I am highly delighted and happy with the performance of the girls and by the grace of God, we will continue to give them all the support that they need going to the WAFCON in July at Morocco,” Gusau added positively.
He further revealed plans to implement policies with the aim of investing more into Women Football in Nigeria: “We need to do more to invest in our women football and we are going to come out with a policy to see how we can make it compulsory for our Premier clubs to see how they can have a female team, as this is the trend all over the world,” he disclosed.
“Once this policy is implemented, then I think we can see our young female footballers being exposed to the world,” the President stated.
