The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appealed to Nigerian football fans to rally behind newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle. The federation has also pledged its full support to ensure his success.
Chelle was announced as the substantive Eagles coach last Tuesday, a decision that has met with mixed reactions from the Nigerian public. Many fans have expressed disappointment with the appointment, considering it below the expected standard for the Super Eagles.
The position of Super Eagles head coach has remained vacant since the resignation of Finidi George, who failed to secure a win in his two games in charge. Technical Director of the NFF Austin Eguavoen had stepped in on an interim capacity to lead the team to qualifying for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco later this year.
The NFF is set to officially unveil Chelle in Abuja on Monday. Despite the public’s divided opinion, the federation emphasizes the importance of national support for the team’s confidence and ultimate success.

“We appreciate the fact that Nigerians are very passionate about the game of football, and that is the reason for the different tones of reactions following the appointment of Coach Chelle,” the federation stated in a Sunday press release. “However, the NFF hereby appeals to Nigerians to come together and support him, as we believe he has the qualities to achieve success with the Super Eagles.”
Chelle’s primary objective is to guide Nigeria through the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The team’s next qualifying matches are against Rwanda (away) and Zimbabwe (home) in March.
However, Chelle’s immediate task will be to lead the Super Eagles B team at the upcoming African Nations Championship in East Africa next month.
