The race for the highest goal scorer award in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) is heating up! Enyimba’s Chijioke Mbaoma and Remo Stars’ Sikiru Alimi are neck and neck, battling to be crowned the “NPFL Goal King” at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Last year, the winner received ₦200,000 for each goal scored, with the total prize money based on the number of goals. If the current standings hold, Mbaoma would win a whopping ₦3.2 million!

The award is sponsored by Eunisell Limited, One of West Africa’s largest independent chemical and oil and gas engineering solutions company.

Mbaoma currently leads the pack with 16 goals, while Alimi trails closely behind with 15. Both players have a chance to add to their tally in their upcoming matches.

The race is practically over for other contenders like Albert Hilary (Plateau United), Jonathan Alukwu (Sporting Lagos), and Godwin Obaje (Enugu Rangers). They would need to score at least three goals each in the remaining games to catch Mbaoma, which is unlikely.

Mbaoma has the home crowd advantage as Enyimba faces Plateau United in Aba. A win is crucial for Enyimba’s quest for a CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup spot.

Meanwhile, Alimi hopes to close the gap when Remo Stars hosts Kwara United at Ikenne. The former Shooting Stars player needs two goals and for Mbaoma to not score to steal the top scorer title.
