Fulham manager Marco Silva expressed his delight with Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey after he scored his first goal of the season in their Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Bassey’s 62nd-minute winner secured Fulham’s 10th win of the season, lifting them to seventh in the league table.  The win also marked the first time this season a team has achieved a league double over Forest.

Despite Forest’s recent dominant 7-0 win against Brighton, they were thoroughly outplayed by the home side.

Bassey has been a key player for Fulham this season but had yet to score.  This goal, his first for the club, will likely boost his confidence and potentially lead to more goals, particularly from set pieces.

Asked about what he felt about the defender’s goal and team celebration, Silva said they have been demanding that he gets into the box more and as a 6ft 1in player, he could get more opportunities to score.

“The players’ celebration showed how much they appreciate Calvin.  It was his first goal for the club, and he’s a very popular figure in the dressing room.  We’ve been working on his positioning in the box, and it was great to see him finally score,” Silva said.

Bassey has played all but one of Fulham’s 25 games this season and has been in the starting lineup.
