Okoye, who is part of the Super Eagles squad to face Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying doubleheader, will be hoping his current form convinces the team’s handlers to hand him the starting role.
The 25-year-old made his international debut on October 13, 2019, in an international friendly against Brazil and was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper until the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where an error in the knockout stages led to the country’s elimination. Following backlash from fans, Okoye withdrew from the team, and since then, Stanley Nwabali has become the preferred starter, leading the team to a second-place finish at the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
