Atalanta suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, ending their 5-game unbeaten run in the competition, and their 14-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Real Madrid had raced to a 3-1 lead courtesy of goals from Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham after De Ketelaere levelled the score line following Mbappe’s opener.

While Lookman scored in the 65th minute to restore hope for the Italian side, his goal was not enough as the European Champions stayed resolute to take all three points.

Speaking after the match, Lookman admitted his team was unlucky while also praising the effort of his teammates: “Tough match today, they took their opportunities when they had them. They are a very quality team, we knew it would be difficult. We were unlucky, but we leave with our heads held high,” he said.

“I always try to give my best and create opportunities for others, as others do for me,” Lookman said when questioned on his goal “A lot of good things, but also some things to learn from. We have another game on Saturday and hopefully we can win it,” he added.

Looking forward, Lookman charged his teammates to move on from the result and go again: “Yes, another big step for us. Today in some moments we showed great quality, it will be important not to get too depressed and start again,” he asserted.

Atalanta will face SK Sturm Graz next in the Champions League as they seek to bounce back to winning ways while Real Madrid will host RB Salzburg in a bid to achieve automatic qualification for the Round of 16.
