Super Eagles and Atalanta attacker, Ademola Lookman, was once again on target as Atalanta defeated Empoli in a dramatic 3-2 victory at Gewiss Stadium, Bergamo on Sunday.
The fixture was Lookman’s first game since being crowned as the best player in Africa at the CAF awards which held in Morocco and prior to the game, he presented the award to Atalanta fans who gave him a standing ovation for his achievement.
Empoli spoiled the party with an early goal in the 13th minute courtesy of Lorenzo Colombo’s strike and things went from bad to worse as Atalanta’s highest goal scorer, Mateo Retegui was withdrawn due to an injury and replaced with Nicolo Zaniolo.
Despite the setback, Charles De Ketelaere leveled the scoreline in the 34th minute with an impressive header to the bottom left corner. Ademola Lookman then turned the game around on the stroke of half time with a well-placed strike to beat Devis Vázquez.
Empoli roared back as Sebastiano Esposito converted a penalty to equalize for the away side, however, with the game heading for a draw, Charles De Ketelaere stepped up once more to score the winning goal for Atalanta in the 86th minute.
The win extends Atalanta’s winning streak in the Serie A to 11 matches. They lead the table with 40 points in 17 games, two points ahead of second-placed Napoli.
Lookman’s Atalanta will hope to extend their winning streak as they travel to face Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s Lazio in a mouth-watering clash to be played at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, 28th December.
