Liverpool have reignited their long-standing interest in Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as they prepare for life without Darwin Nunez, Bold Sports reports.
Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica for €85 million in 2022, is out of favour under Jurgen Klopp. Reports suggest the Uruguayan could be on his way out this summer, with clubs from Saudi Arabia and Europe showing interest.
According to Anfield Watch, Anfield sources revealed that Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, have identified Osimhen as the perfect replacement. The Napoli striker, currently on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray, has been on Liverpool’s radar for years.
Osimhen endured a turbulent summer transfer window, with links to several top European clubs, including PSG, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham. Despite reported agreements with PSG and Chelsea, Napoli’s high asking price scuppered both moves, leading to his surprise loan switch to Galatasaray in September.
Since his move to Turkey, the 26-year-old has been in red-hot form, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in just 16 appearances. His goal contribution rate of one every 65 minutes has made him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
Liverpool now face competition from Manchester United, who are also interested in Osimhen as a potential replacement for Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee. New United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly dissatisfied with both forwards’ performances this season.
However, Liverpool’s long-standing admiration for Osimhen gives them a potential edge in the race for his signature.
Osimhen’s future at Napoli remains uncertain, and Galatasaray is unlikely to retain him beyond his loan spell. With Liverpool looking to offload Nunez and bolster their attack, a summer swoop for the Nigerian could be on the cards.
Osimhen, who previously topped the Serie A scoring charts, would bring proven goal-scoring prowess to Anfield as Arne Slot aims to refresh his attacking options with Mo Salah’s whose contract expires this summer’s situation also uncertain.
