Alex Iwobi has credited his positive mindset and strong support system for his standout performance in Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Brighton in the Premier League on Thursday.

The Nigeria midfielder, who scored twice in the game, expressed delight at seeing the team’s hard work in training reflect in their performance.

“It’s an amazing feeling for us because we work so hard in training,” Iwobi said. “When the results from training come into matches, it’s an amazing feeling. Also scoring from set pieces—even though the goal is not by one of our players, it’s still a goal from a set piece.”

Iwobi highlighted the strategy behind his goals, which came from exploiting Brighton’s mistakes and keeping his composure.

“For the first one, we know Brighton like to play out from the back, so we had a strategy to try and press them. Obviously, at times, everyone makes mistakes, and I was able to capitalize on the first mistake,” he said.

“The second goal, I felt like I was fighting for my dear life trying to get the ball off one of their players. When I got a bit of time and space, I tried to keep myself composed and hit the target.”

He also reflected on his current form, attributing it to the influence of those around him.

“Just being mentally in a good place like the support system I have outside of football—my family, my friends, and obviously my manager and teammates,” Iwobi said. “I just feel like I’m mentally in the best place I’ve been all my life.”

Looking ahead to Fulham’s next match against Arsenal, Iwobi said the victory has given the team confidence.

“Today gives us a confidence boost for Arsenal. We hope to get a good result there,” he said. “Not just for me, but there are a few other players here that used to play there, so we’ll see what we can do.”

The 28-year-old graduated through Arsenal ranks, going on to make his senior debut for the Gunners and playing 100 senior games before moving to Everton from where he joined Fulham.

Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson also graduated from Arsenal academy before joining Fulham this summer while goalkeeper Bernd Leno also previously played for the Gunners.
