Ikorodu City continued their impressive debut season in the NPFL as they trashed Akwa United 4-1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan on Sunday, December 1.

Prior to the game, Ikorodu City had gone unbeaten for five consecutive games, recording 4 wins and 1 draw in a sensational month of November for the club. In stark contrast, Akwa United won their 3 home games in November, however, they lost the 2 away games played, sparking concerns about their away form.

The Oga Boys interim coach, Nurudeen Aweroro made only one change to the starting line up that defeated El Kanemi Warriors as Emmanuel Solomon was introduced to lead the attack in replacement of Ayemwenre Rivio.

Ikorodu City got off to a remarkable start as Tosin Oyedukun scored his first goal in the NPFL to give the Oga Boys the lead in just the 3rd minute of the game. However, Akwa United got back into the game courtesy of a Chijioke Alaekwe curler in the 36th minute.

On the stroke of half time, Tosin Oyedokun turned provider as he assisted Emmanuel Solomon to restore City’s lead and disappoint the hopeful away supporters. Two minutes into the second half, talented center back, Olatunji Abdulmalik took the game away from Akwa United as he doubled the lead for his first NPFL goal of the season.

The 19-year-old then assisted Ayomide Cole in the 71st minute to seal the win for Ikorodu City. The goal was Cole’s second in a row after his impressive performance against El Kanemi Warriors.

With the win, Ikorodu City have now scored the most goals (22) in the league, they are six games unbeaten and they are now third on the table, five points away from league leaders, Rivers United. They are also on a five game winning streak at home, highlighting just how inspiring their debut season in the NPFL has been.

They face Bayelsa United next on Sunday, December 8 as they attempt to stage what would be an extra special title challenge. Akwa United meanwhile, host Bendel Insurance next as they seek to escape the relegation zone.
