Heartland Owerri’s four-match unbeaten streak in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) came to an end on Friday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko stadium.

Heartland Owerri were brimming with confidence ahead of the match, boasting two wins and two draws in their last four games, with an impressive defensive record of just one goal conceded in that run. On the other hand, history favored Katsina United, who had gone undefeated in their previous six NPFL encounters with Heartland.

The first half saw both teams create scoring opportunities, but neither was able to capitalize, resulting in a goalless stalemate at halftime.

The second half continued in the same fashion until the deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute, as Mohammed Ibrahim struck the decisive blow, scoring the opening goal to put Katsina United ahead.

In a desperate attempt to salvage the game, Emmanuel Amuneke made a double substitution, bringing on John Bassey and Stephen Ezeamaiwe for Emmanuel Charles and Terdo Shimagande, but Katsina United’s defense held firm, enabling them to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory and claim all three points.

Katsina United’s victory propels them to 13th place in the NPFL standings, where they are now tied on points with Heartland Owerri, who remain in 11th position with 29 points.

With the first encounter now done, Matchday 23 of the NPFL will resume on Saturday as El Kanemi Warriors will face off against Nasarawa United in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Meanwhile, league leaders Remo Stars will host Kano Pillar in an attempt to increase their advantage over Shooting Stars who will take on relegation battlers, Bendel Insurance in the day’s late kickoff.
