Former Nigerian defender Godwin Okpara has issued a rallying cry to the Super Eagles, emphasizing the importance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup which will take place in North America.
The Super Eagles currently occupy fifth place in Group C of their FIFA World Cup qualification group, trailing Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin by four points. However, they have an opportunity to revive their campaign with crucial upcoming matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
Securing victories in both fixtures is paramount for the Super Eagles, as they strive to avoid the disappointment of missing consecutive World Cups. With their qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the team must summon the determination and resilience needed to overcome their opponents and get back on track.

Speaking with Brila Media, Godwin Okpara emphasized that participating in the World Cup is the ultimate aspiration for every footballer: “Every player’s dream is to play at the World Cup. If this team don’t qualify, it will be bad for their record,” he warned.
Godwin Okpara’s words are from experience, having represented Nigeria at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where the Super Eagles reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Denmark in a 4-1 loss
Nonetheless, the Super Eagles players and their new head coach, Eric Chelle will be highly motivated to secure a World Cup spot, particularly since many of the team’s top players have yet to participate in the tournament.
In a bid to foster a strong bond with his squad and boost their morale ahead of the challenging task, Eric Chelle embarked on a trip to visit some of his key players based abroad, with pictures showing him alongside Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Moses Simon.
