Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has wished newly appointed Nigerian coach Eric Chelle the best in his new position but is uncertain whether he will be able to qualify Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation earlier in the month appointed the Franco-Malian as the new substantive Eagles coach, taking over from Austin Eguavoen, who has held the role in an interim capacity and helped Nigeria qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rohr, who managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, qualifying the country for two AFCONs and the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has wished the former Mali international and coach the best in his new role.

“Of course, I know Eric Sékou Chelle is now with Nigeria, and good luck to him,” Rohr told Nation Sports.

The Super Eagles are currently fifth on the qualification log for the 2026 World Cup and winless in their first four games. They will need to be perfect in the rest of their qualification games and hope that other results work in their favour.

Looking at the road ahead, Rohr, whose Benin team is in the same group as Nigeria and shockingly won the qualifiers 2-1, says it will be difficult for Chelle to qualify the nation for the Mundial but also notes that in football, nothing is impossible.

“It’s not going to be easy (for Chelle) to qualify for the World Cup, but of course, everything is still possible.”

Eric Chelle’s stats as a national team coach with Mali were impressive. He averaged a 63.64% win rate with Mali.
