Four NPFL teams will represent Nigeria in continental competitions in the 2025-26 season, despite Enyimba’s early exit from the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The confirmation of Nigeria’s four continental spots came after Stade Malien suffered a similar fate to Enyimba, exiting the tournament following a 1-0 defeat to CD Lunda at the Stade 26 Mars stadium in Bamako on Sunday.
The Malian side ended their campaign at the bottom of Group B, accumulating only four points from six matches, whereas Enyimba concluded their Group D participation in third place, securing 5 points.

Usually, the top 12 countries on the CAF co-efficient table produce four teams for continental football while the countries below them produce only two teams.
As such, the outcomes of Enyimba and Stade Malien’s campaigns had significant implications for their respective countries, as Nigeria rose to 12th on the CAF coefficient table, while Mali fell to 13th. Consequently, Nigeria will retain four continental slots, whereas Mali will be allocated only two slots.
Although this development brings relief to other NPFL teams vying for top-four spots, it also serves as a warning signal for Nigeria as a footballing nation, highlighting potential dangers and challenges that lie ahead.
Nonetheless, for the 2025-26 season, Nigeria’s continental representation will comprise two NPFL teams competing in the CAF Champions League and another two teams participating in the CAF Confederation Cup.
