Flamingos get first-round bye in U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, to face South Africa, Gabon winner

Nigeria’s Flamingos have been drawn with the winners of the first round clash between South Africa and Gabon as The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) conducted the official Draw of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday, 12th December 2024, at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo.

A total of 28 African nations will be engaged for the five slots that will be available for Africa. However Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia were the trio of African representatives at last year’s edition of the FIFA U17 World Cup, as such, they qualified automatically for the second round alongside Burundi, who are the best ranked non-qualified team to the world cup.

The other 24 teams will play the first round with 12 teams qualifying for the second round in addition to the four teams that received a bye. The 16 teams will then play the first leg of the second round between 7th – 9th March, 2025 before playing the second leg between 14th – 16th March, 2025.

Eight teams will qualify for the third round and play the first leg between 18th-20th April, 2025, before the second leg which will take place between 25th-27th April, 2025. The four winners from the third round will represent the continent in the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Africa will host the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time when Morocco stages the global competition between 17 October – 08 November 2025 and they will make up the fifth spot available for the continent.

Nigeria’s Flamingos will be aiming to qualify once again for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after they were eliminated in the quarterfinals courtesy of a 2-0 loss to the United States in the last edition which took place in the Dominican Republic.
