Nigeria’s Flamingos have guaranteed their safe passage into the semifinals of the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls Cup following a 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast U17 in a tense but exciting counter that was played in Centre Prampram, Ghana on Monday.
The game was tied until the 38th minute when Chidi Harmony broke the deadlock with a simple finish following a brilliant run and assist by Janet Akekoromowei. Chidi doubled the lead for Nigeria with another clinical finish in the 48th minute to increase her tally to two goals in the competition.
Three minutes after the goal, Chidi got in behind the defense of the Ivory Coast U17 once again following a pinpoint cross to find her before controlling the ball calmly and slotting it into the back of the net for her hatrick.
Ivory Coast U17 roared back with a goal straight after conceding and another goal eight minutes later to mount pressure on the Nigerian girls. However, the Flamingos remained resolute to guarantee their second consecutive victory in the inaugural tournament.
Chidi Harmony who was Nigeria’s highest goal scorer in the qualifiers for this year’s U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup with 12 goals in six games has now made her mark in the WAFU B U17 Girls Cup.
Nigeria will now take on Benin in the semifinals and if they win, they will face either Ivory Coast or hosts, Ghana, in the final for the chance to make history as the first winners of the tournament.
