As the inaugural WAFU Zone B U17 Girls’ cup gets underway, Nigeria’s Flamingos stand poised to make history as the first winners of the sub-regional tournament which takes place in Prampram, Ghana from the 12th of December to the 22nd of December, 2024.
The Flamingos are drawn in Group B alongside Niger Republic and Côte d’Ivoire, while hosts Ghana will face Benin Republic in Group A following the withdrawals of Burkina Faso and Togo. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals of the competition.
Led by experienced Gaffer, Bankole Olowookere, Nigeria’s Flamingos will battle against Niger’s U17 girls’ team in the first group game of Group B on Thursday, 7PM Nigerian time, at Prampram, Accra as they seek to secure an all-important first win which would boost their confidence for the rest of the tournament.
The Flamingos impressed at the 2024 U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic by winning all three group games and scoring nine goals before being eliminated by the United States in the quarterfinals courtesy of a 2-0 defeat. As such, they will be motivated to go another step further by bringing home the WAFU B trophy.
They will also be inspired by the presence of FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup scorers Shakirat Moshood and Harmony Chidi, alongside key players like goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, defenders Taiwo Adegoke and Ayomide Ibrahim, midfielder Faridat Abdulwahab, and forwards Peace Effiong and Mary Lucky Nkpa.
