The January transfer window is set to close today across major European leagues. While several Super Eagles players, including Gift Orban, Akor Adams, and Umar Sadiq, have already secured moves, there are still a few who should push for a transfer before the window shuts.
Here are five Nigerian players who urgently need a move to get their careers back on track:
Taiwo Awoniyi
Taiwo Awoniyi has struggled to make an impact for Nottingham Forest this season, managing just one goal in 21 appearances across all competitions. With Chris Wood in excellent form—especially after his recent hat-trick—and other forwards contributing regularly, Awoniyi risks further bench time.
A loan move could be his best option, and fortunately, Everton is reportedly interested in bringing him to Goodison Park to fill the gap left by the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Kelechi Iheanacho
Since his summer move to Sevilla, Kelechi Iheanacho has failed to impress and is now considered surplus to requirements, especially after the club’s recent signing of fellow Nigerian striker Akor Adams.
Several clubs, including Middlesbrough and Celtic, have expressed interest, with Middlesbrough leading the race. Iheanacho is expected to complete a move before the deadline.
Emmanuel Dennis
Another Nigerian forward in urgent need of a move is Emmanuel Dennis. The Super Eagles attacker is not in manager Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans, and Nottingham Forest is open to selling him. However, his high wage demands have complicated a permanent transfer.
Clubs such as Glasgow Rangers and Watford are keen on signing him, with a loan move seeming like the most likely outcome before the window closes.
Bright Osayi-Samuel
Bright Osayi-Samuel finds himself frozen out at Fenerbahçe after failing to agree on a new contract with the club. In response, the Turkish giants have omitted him from their domestic squad for the second half of the season, making him eligible only for UEFA Europa League matches.
With limited game time on the horizon, Osayi-Samuel will be eager to secure at least a loan move to the Premier League or Championship to avoid missing out on regular football for the next four months.
Cyriel Dessers
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has struggled for minutes due to the rise of Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane at Rangers.
While he is open to leaving, concrete offers have been scarce. However, with just hours left in the transfer window, he remains hopeful that a last-minute deal will materialize.
