Drama ensued in the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium on Monday as Handsome Surveyor scored a late goal to snatch all three points from Plateau United who were close to winning their first away game of the season.
Going into the game, Rivers United were three points behind league leaders, Remo Stars. As such, they were desperate for a victory that will ensure they remain on the same points with the ‘Sky Blue Stars’.
Meanwhile, Plateau United had not won away from home and they were languishing in 18th place with only goal difference separating them from the bottom side on the table.
Plateau United thought they had taken the lead courtesy of Vincent Temitope’s goal in the 18th minute of the game. However, referee Olawale Fawole ruled the goal out for a foul throw in the build-up to the goal.
Undeterred by the referee’s call, the away side continued to push and they were rewarded with a goal in the 51st minute of the game as Adamu Abubakar played in Vincent Temitope who held off his marker and calmly slotted in the ball to give Plateau United the lead.
Frustrated with the performance of his team and the calls of the referee, Finidi George was sent off in the 80th minute by Olawale Fawole for dissent. With the game looking like a win for the away side, Handsome Surveyor showed up as the hero as he scored in the 6th minute of added time to level the score line.
Surveyor’s goal however led to various protests from the bench of the away side and due to dissent, Plateau United head coach, Mbwas Mangut was also sent off in the 13th minute of added time. The game eventually ended 1-1 as both teams had to settle for a draw.
With the draw, Rivers United remain second on the table, however, they are now two points behind Remo Stars after 19 games. Plateau United jump out of the relegation zone to 16th on the table with 20 points in the same number of games.
