The Federal Government, in an attempt to rescue Nigeria’s bid for qualification to the 2026 World Cup holding in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has launched the Presidential Support Group (PSG).

According to SCORENigeria: “The Federal Government has earmarked N3 billion to a presidential committee, now to be known as the Presidential Support Group (PSG), that will assist the Super Eagles in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.”

“The start-up fund for the PSG has been captured in the country’s 2025 budget. The PSG will provide financial, administrative, and logistical support for the Super Eagles to turn around a faltering qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup,” the report added.

The Super Eagles are in a dangerous situation as regards World Cup qualification as they are on the edge of failing to qualify for the global showpiece in back-to-back tournaments.

In 2022, Ghana qualified for the World Cup by holding Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Abuja, winning the tie on away goals. The result led to an unfortunate incidence as fan violence ensued, with Nigerians expressing their displeasure and anger at the Super Eagles and the NFF.

This year, Nigeria is back in a very tight spot. With three points in four matches, the Super Eagles sit 5th in group C, four points away from Rwanda and South Africa who are top of the table, and second-place respectively.

To qualify for the World Cup, the Super Eagles would have to stage a miracle and the Federal Government believes that with this funding, there is the chance to still make it for the global event in 2026.

Fans are hoping that the efforts of the Federal Government coupled with the many talented stars are fighting to ensure Nigeria is back to where they belong, will propel the Super Eagles to represent the continent in the World Cup.
