Olympic bronze medalist Ese Brume has opened up about the “horrible shock” she experienced following a recent car crash in the United States, where she narrowly escaped serious injury.

Brume, who won Nigeria’s only athletics medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, shared details of the incident, describing how the car she was traveling in with a British friend was struck on the freeway and left completely wrecked.

“I was on a journey with my female friend, a Briton, and our car was stuck in the middle of the freeway,” Brume told The Guardian. “In the process of calling 911, an SUV hit us from behind and caused a wreck. It was a total wreck. I was at the passenger’s seat.”

While Brume sustained a sprained ankle and strained neck, her friend suffered a shoulder strain, concussion, and several cuts.

“I thank God for sparing our lives, but I am yet to fully overcome the shock,” Brume said.

Currently undergoing therapy for her ankle, Brume remains optimistic about returning to competition next year.

“I will return to training as soon as the doctors advise me to do so. I am looking forward to competing in the World Championships and other competitions next year,” she stated.
