Chairman of the Nigerian Professional Football Association, Gbenga Elegbeleye asserted the importance of transparency and credibility in the NPFL while discussing with reporters in Akure, the state capital of Ondo state.
While there have being various instances of fans being dissatisfied with the officiating, consequently leading to skirmishes that has resulted to clubs such as Bendel Insurance, Plateau United and most recently Ikorodu city being punished, Elegbeleye maintained that the association will ensure that no form of favoritism is tolerated in the league and the referees will be motivated to ensure that matches are well organized.
The chairman added that the league management will continue its zero tolerance for thuggery and any kind of violence at the match venues.
According to Elegbeleye, ““we have started with the reduction of three points from any erring team and financial punishment to ensure that the visiting teams are not intimidated.” “Since we started reducing three points it is the home teams that are now protecting away teams,” he added.
He also spoke on the changing trend of away wins in the league: “The home team must win syndrome has reduced drastically, on match day one of the current season, we recorded no fewer than four away wins,” Elegbeleye affirmed.
“We must insist on the rule and not compromising the standards to get it right. There are lots of investors who are ready to partner us for the growth of the league,” he declared.
