Super Eagles head coach Austin Eguavoen has named Victor Boniface and Stanley Nwabali in the starting lineup for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, keeping faith in the duo.
There had been growing calls for Maduka Okoye to return as the Eagles’ number one, following his stellar form in the Italian Serie A with Udinese, where he ranks second for the most saves. Fans were also eager to see if Eguavoen would stick with Boniface, who is yet to score for the national team after eight appearances.
Boniface, the 22-year-old striker, will lead the attack, while goalkeeper Nwabali gets his opportunity between the posts.
In what appears to be a bold selection, West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi — a regular in the Eagles’ defense — and winger Chidera Ejuke, who is returning to the squad after topping the charts for successful dribbles in Europe’s top five leagues, have been left on the bench.
Boniface, known for his physicality and pace, will look to break his scoring drought against a Libya side that poses a tricky challenge. In defense, William Troost-Ekong will marshal the backline as captain, while Benjamin Tanimu and Bright Osayi-Samuel provide further defensive options from the bench.
In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka provide a solid partnership, while Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Ademola Lookman will offer creative outlets in attack. The team will look to secure a crucial victory as they aim to strengthen their position in the AFCON qualification standings.
Eguavoen’s starting XI also features Ola Aina, Kingsley Onyemaechi, and Calvin Bassey in defense. The bench includes players such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Chukwueze, who could be key impact substitutes later in the game.
