The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will mark its 50th anniversary in 2025 with various activities, including the highly anticipated 2025 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon.
Scheduled for March 1, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, the event will feature 21km and 5km race categories, drawing participants from across Africa and beyond.
According to a statement by Olukayode Thomas, Director of Communications & Media for the ECOWAS Marathon, the 5km race will begin at Eagle Square and conclude at the ECOWAS Commission in Asokoro, while the 21km half-marathon will start and end at the ECOWAS Commission.
Gabriel Okon, Race Director, emphasized that the event is open to runners of all categories, from elite athletes to fitness enthusiasts. “This marathon is not just a celebration of athleticism but a testament to unity and the vibrant spirit of our region,” said Okon. He highlighted that over $71,000 in prize money is up for grabs, with increased prizes for the top ten finishers in the 5km race.
Okon described the event as an opportunity to bring people together through sports, stating, “The ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon is more than a race; it symbolizes unity, youth empowerment, and the celebration of healthy living. We eagerly anticipate welcoming participants from across Africa and beyond to this extraordinary occasion.”
Participants will receive official race certificates, finisher medals, running vests, number bibs, participant guides, and surprise gifts. Interested runners can register online at www.ecowasabujamarathon.org or obtain forms from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Athletics Association offices nationwide, or Sports Council offices in the Federal Capital Territory.
