Organisers of the 2025 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon have increased the prize money for the 5km fun race to $1,000 as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Chairman of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre, Amb. Francis Chuks Njoaguani, said the increase is aimed at encouraging more citizens to embrace running for its health benefits.
“The 5km fun run is special to us because we initiated it as part of the 21km race to encourage our people to adopt a culture of walking, jogging, and exercising,” Njoaguani said. “To mark ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary, we’ve increased the prize money from $750 to $1,000, and we’re not stopping there — other top finishers will also benefit, as outlined in the participants’ guide. We’re inviting elite runners from all ECOWAS countries to join the event.”
The marathon, scheduled for March 1, 2025, in Abuja, will feature 21km and 5km races, attracting runners and fitness enthusiasts from across West Africa and beyond.
The 5km race will start at Eagle Square and finish at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Asokoro, while the 21km half-marathon will begin and end at the ECOWAS Commission.
Race Director Gabriel Okon highlighted the event’s significance, saying, “This marathon is more than just a race. It’s a celebration of athleticism, unity, and the vibrant spirit of our region. With over $71,000 in prize money, there’s something for everyone — from elite runners to fun runners and fitness enthusiasts.”
