Nigeria’s Men’s Basketball team D’Tigers, along with 15 other African nations, will be participating in the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, which is set to commence in November.
Following their remarkable comeback to qualify for the AfroBasket 2025 Championship, scheduled to take place in Angola from August 12-24, D’Tigers will now focus on securing a spot in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
D’Tigers’ participation in the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers marks a fresh attempt to reach the global tournament after failing to qualify for the 2023 edition, which was co-hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Nigeria will be joined by 15 other African countries that successfully qualified for the AfroBasket 2025 Championship, including Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte’ d’ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.

These 16 teams will participate in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, with the draw determining the teams’ paths to the final tournament in Qatar scheduled to take place on May 13.
At the last FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023, Africa was represented by Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Cape Verde, and South Sudan, with the latter two making their World Cup debuts. On the other hand, Nigeria’s D’Tigers have qualified for the FIBA World Cup three times, with their best finish being a Round of 16 appearance in 2006.
Although D’Tigers have not progressed beyond the preliminary round in their two other World Cup appearances (1998 and 2019), they are now determined to build on their impressive performance in the Afrobasket qualifiers and make a stronger impact in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers.
With renewed optimism and a fresh perspective, D’Tigers will aim to exceed their previous achievements and make a lasting impression at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, proudly representing Nigeria on the global stage.
