Assistant head coach of Ghana U17 girls admitted in his press conference that Nigeria’s Flamingos are physically stronger than his team, however, he warned that the hosts will find ways to exploit the weaknesses of the opposition.
Nigeria’s Flamingos will take on Ghana at Prampram for the final of the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls’ cup having defeated Benin 2-0 in the second semifinal to set up an intriguing clash with the hosts who trashed Ivory Coast 5-0 in the first semifinal.
Both teams have won their three games in the competition so far with Nigeria defeating Niger 9-0 before sealing qualification for the knockout stages with a 3-2 win over Ivory Coast. Meanwhile, Ghana defeated Benin 4-1 in the opening game of the tournament before a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the same opposition sealed their qualification for the semifinals.
Speaking ahead of the game with the press, Dacosta expressed admiration for the Flamingos while reiterating the ambition of his team to compete for the trophy: “They are physically fit, stronger and bigger than we are, but we are going to strategize and work through them. That is why I said I won’t disclose our system or pattern of play here, we will work indoors and come out with it,” he confidently declared. “This game is different, we are building the girls to give them the needed confidence that they can make it,” he added.
The assistant coach also charged the fans to rally behind the team as they seek to make history: “All we plead for is that they should rally behind us and pray for us, because with that we can be victorious,” he preached.
The final between the two African powerhouses will be played at Centre Prampram, Ghana, by 5pm Ghanaian Time and 6pm Nigerian Time on Sunday, December 22nd, 2024. History beckons for the winner of this clash as the chance to be crowned the inaugural champions of the WAFU B U17 Girls’ cup is up for grabs.
