Nigeria and Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers expressed his disappointment and frustration after his team’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday.
Dessers thought he had secured a crucial point for Rangers when he equalized in the 88th minute, but Bruno Fernandes’ late goal in the 92nd minute snatched victory for Manchester United dramatically.
Speaking after the game, Dessers shared his emotions, stressing that the loss was a tough one to take: “It is a really tough one, especially with the change of emotions at the end. First you have the feeling you will walk away with a point which is a good result at Old Trafford but at the end you let it slip and that hurts.”
Despite the disappointment, Dessers was quick to praise his teammates, particularly the young players who made a significant impact during the game: “I think we can be very proud to play this way at Old Trafford with a few injuries and some of the injuries during the game as well. The young guys who came in did an unbelievable shift, in work ethic, in showing courage, in playing forward, in their second or third game on the highest level, that’s a big complement to them.”
“Then you think you get the reward for all the effort and the hardwork. It hurts with the result at the end,” Dessers added.
Looking ahead, Dessers remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of taking positives from the match: “It was a difficult game against a good opponent. In the first 70 minutes we didn’t give a lot of chances away, that’s a big plus and something we should take to the league. If we could do this against Manchester United then we can do it in the league.”

Dessers concluded by expressing his hope for a strong finish to their European campaign: “Our European adventure has been fantastic until now with some great results, and hopefully we can cap it off next week with a good result again and move to the next stage.”
The goal against Manchester United was a milestone for Dessers, marking his 150th career goal and his 17th this season. However, despite his impressive form, Dessers has been linked with a move away from Rangers due to reduced game time.
