Head of Global Development for the International Cricket Council, William Glenwright, has hailed the performance of Nigeria at the 2025 ICC T20 U-19 Women’s World Cup in Malaysia noting that it could be the start of the West African nation becoming a powerhouse in the sport on the continent.
The Nigerian girls fondly called the ‘JuniorFemaleYellowGreens’ were underdogs competing but stunned the world by making it to the final 6 with two massive wins over Ireland Women (by six runs) and the mighty New Zealand (by two runs).
A spirited performance for the girls on the world stage for the first time saw them win two games out of five recording just one loss while two other games were abandoned due to poor weather conditions. The abandoned match against England, cost Nigeria a place in the semifinals, after finishing 3rd in group 2 of the Super 6.

Reacting to Nigeria’s performance at the competition, Glenwright, a former World Rugby general manager for Asia and Oceania believes that Nigeria’s performance at the competition could be the final springboard that sees them become a force to reckon with in Africa and by extension globally.
“A stunning performance by @cricket_nigeria – I wonder if we will look back on this tournament as the inflection point for Cricket Nigeria and the establishment of another genuine power in African cricket,” Glenwrite wrote on X.
The Nigerian team who are billed to arrive in the country today have been the darling of every sports fan in the country and have put Nigeria on the global cricket map with players like Lucky Piety, and Lillian Ude amongst others writing their name in gold.
