Toluwalase Arokodare’s 15th goal of the season was not enough to secure Genk a victory as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Club Brugge in the first leg of the Belgian Cup semifinal.

Genk faced a formidable challenge, as Club Brugge boasted an impressive 16-game unbeaten streak and a stellar home record, with their last home defeat dating back to September against Gent.

Genk started the game strongly, taking an early lead as Toluwalase Arokodare expertly converted a precise cross from Jarne Steuckers into the back of the net.

However, Club Brugge swiftly responded, with Joel Ordonez meeting a well-delivered corner kick with a powerful header to level the score line in the 34th minute.

Club Brugge increased the intensity of their pressure in pursuit of a first-leg victory, and their efforts paid off in the 74th minute when Christos Tzolis confidently converted a penalty, handing the hosts a crucial lead.

Genk made a late push for an equalizer, introducing fresh legs through substitutions, but Club Brugge’s defense stood strong, sealing the win and a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg.

Despite the disappointing defeat, Arokodare’s goal means he has now tied his goal tally for last season (15) in about 27 games less, highlighting his outstanding progress this season.

Genk will look to bounce back from the frustrating loss against Club Brugge when they travel to face KV Mechelen in their upcoming match on Saturday.
