Chuba Akpom capped off a strong performance with a late goal as Ajax secured a 2-0 victory over Telstar in the second round of the Dutch Cup at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
In what was a relatively difficult match for Ajax, Akpom delivered the decisive moment near the end to ensure progression to the round of 16. Daniele Rugani had earlier opened the scoring, but it was Akpom’s late strike that sealed the win in style.
Although Ajax controlled possession in the first half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Francesco Farioli’s side looked unconvincing in attack, with the only real highlight coming from Brian Brobbey, who turned sharply to escape his marker but sent his shot wide of the post.
The second half saw Ajax play with greater urgency. Their breakthrough finally came in the 64th minute, when Branco van den Boomen’s precise corner found Daniele Rugani. The Italian defender’s header into the far corner gave Ajax the lead.
As Telstar pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Akpom delivered the decisive blow in the 86th minute. The forward positioned himself perfectly to meet a low cross, heading the ball powerfully into the net via the underside of the bar. The goal not only secured victory for Ajax but highlighted Akpom’s growing importance to the team.
This was the final match at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2024, and Akpom’s goal provided the perfect send-off for the home fans. Ajax will now turn their attention to Sunday’s away fixture against Sparta Rotterdam before heading into the winter break.
