Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been named in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week, compiled by former Watford captain Troy Deeney, after his commanding display in Fulham’s 2-1 away win over victory over Chelsea on Thursday.
The win was Fulham’s first victory in Stamford Bridge in 45 years.
Although Cole Palmer’s stunning strike denied Bassey a clean sheet, Deeney praised the Nigeria defender’s performance, saying: “Solid again. Murillo kept a clean sheet and Bassey would have had one if not for a wonderful goal from Cole Palmer. Both were wonderful and instrumental to their teams getting victories.”
Bassey’s resilience and composure at the back played a crucial role in Fulham’s triumph, further cementing his reputation as a reliable defender in the Premier League.
His inclusion in the Team of the Week makes it a second time in a row for a Super Eagles player following Ola Aina’s inclusion in the Team of the Week for the last round of games after opening the goals in Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 victory over Brentford.
Other players in Deeney’s Team of the Week included Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest), whose goalkeeping heroics helped secure a clean sheet, and full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham) and Pervis Estupiñán (Brighton), who impressed both defensively and offensively. Murillo (Nottingham Forest) joined Bassey in defense.
In midfield, Curtis Jones (Liverpool) was lauded for his brilliant performance in his 100th league appearance, alongside Joelinton (Newcastle), who has been pivotal in Newcastle’s recent form.
The forwards included Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, who scored straight from the corner and assisted against Manchester United, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, and Newcastle duo Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, with the latter described by Deeney as the best striker in the Premier League.
