Fulham defender Calvin Bassey believes the 10-man Cottagers deserved more from their impressive 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby on Sunday.
Bassey delivered a strong performance at the heart of Fulham’s defense but was caught out of position when Brennan Johnson gave Spurs the lead in the 54th minute. However, Fulham bounced back with an equalizer in the 67th minute, thanks to an assist from Bassey’s compatriot Alex Iwobi, which captain Tom Cairney converted.
The game took a challenging turn for Fulham when Cairney was sent off in the 83rd minute, reducing the team to 10 men. Despite the setback, Fulham’s defense held firm to deny Tottenham any late winner.
Reflecting on the match, Bassey expressed his disappointment at not securing all three points, especially after such a high-caliber team performance on the road in a derby.
“I think we deserved more,” Bassey said in a post-match interview. “Fraser Forster [Tottenham’s goalkeeper] made some incredible saves—three that could have been goals. We were a bit unlucky, especially with the red card when we had momentum. But on the bright side, we managed the game well and didn’t concede late, which has been an issue in past matches.”
Bassey highlighted Fulham’s chances, particularly in the first half, and praised the team’s efforts in containing Tottenham’s attacking threat. “We had the better chances, especially early on. We also did well to limit their opportunities. They’re a quality side and will always create chances, but I think we held our own.”
Despite Spurs edging possession with 52%, Fulham were more dangerous in attack, registering 14 shots—six on target—compared to Tottenham’s eight attempts, with only three on target.
Bassey viewed the performance as an important response to Fulham’s 4-1 defeat to Wolves the previous week. “It was a needed reaction after the Wolves loss,” he added. “Hopefully, we gave a good impression to the fans. We’ve got a busy week ahead, so it’s nice to carry some confidence into the next few games.”
Fulham’s challenging schedule continues with matches against Brighton, Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Chelsea, and Bournemouth before the end of the year.
