The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has condemned the treatment of the Super Eagles, after they were stranded for over 15 hours at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya.

CAF labeled the incident as “disturbing and unacceptable,” and has referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for further investigation.

In a statement released by CAF’s Communications Department, the governing body expressed its concerns, stating, “CAF views the disturbing and unacceptable experiences of the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) at an airport in Libya in a very serious light.”

The Super Eagles were en route to Benghazi for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier when they encountered severe delays and mistreatment by Libyan authorities. The team was denied permission to land in Benghazi and was stranded at Al Abraq airport for hours without clear communication or logistical support.

CAF has already initiated contact with both Libyan and Nigerian authorities to address the issue.

“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities,” the statement read.

CAF further assured that necessary actions would be taken against those found culpable, as the incident has been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board for investigation.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations,” CAF added.
