Brentford manager Thomas Frank has labelled the acquisition of 20-year-old right-back Michael Kayode from Fiorentina as a “very good signing.”

The Super Eagles-eligible defender on Friday joined Brentford on loan from Fiorentina until the end of the season. The deal also includes an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for €16m.

The 20-year-old right-back had a breakthrough campaign for Fiorentina last season, making 26 appearances in the Italian Serie A, scoring one goal, and providing two assists. He also played a key role for the Viola in their UEFA Europa Conference League run to the final, where they eventually lost to Olympiacos.

Kayode, who is a player of Nigerian descent, is currently representing the Italian U-21s but is still eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior level.

Speaking on the signing of the 20-year-old, Thomas Frank said he is a really good defender who will add more strength to the full-back position.

“A very good signing, I think,” said Frank. “I really like him, and I’m very happy that we managed to sign him to give us a little bit more depth in the full-back positions.

“He’s very talented and is a fantastic physical package. He’s got good ability going forward and is very good defensively.”

The Dane also confirmed that the Italian U-21 player will not be available for the Bee’s clash away at Crystal Palace due to international clearance issues; however, he has begun training with his new teammates.

“We will not be able to get that [international clearance] before Sunday,” Frank added. “He hasn’t played as much this season, but last season he played, more or less, the full season with Fiorentina in Serie A.

“He’s a bubbly character who is very, very nice. We need to get him bedded in and integrated. He needs to train and understand our principles, which will probably take a bit of time, and that is natural. There’s a lot of things to factor in but if he’s fit and shows he’s the best, then he will play.”
