Bendel Insurance are temporarily out of the relegation zone after a late 1-0 win against Lobi Stars at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin, in match day 18 of the Nigerian Professional Football League played on Saturday.
The Benin-based club were on an impressive three-game unbeaten run coming into this fixture while Lobi Stars had defeated Plateau United in their last fixture courtesy of a lone goal by Waheed Adedayo.
The first half of the game was quiet as both teams failed to create enough chances to hurt the opposition. However, the second half was more exciting as they began to seek for a goal to guarantee the win for their sides.
With both teams going for the winner, it was Bendel Insurance that eventually broke the hearts of the away side courtesy of an 83rd minute goal by Isaac Annor. The “Benin Arsenal” then defended resolutely till the full-time whistle to extend their unbeaten run to four games.
With the win, Bendel Insurance are now 16th on the NPFL table with 20 points in 18 games. They are one point ahead of Lobi Stars who have now dropped to 17th place. However, Insurance still has to hope that other results go their way if they are to stay outside the relegation zone at the end of the game week.
They will face Enyimba in their next match as they aim to continue their unbeaten run while Lobi Stars will host Heartland Owerri in an attempt to bounce back from the defeat.
Other NPFL fixtures on Saturday saw Kano Pillars defeat Heartland Owerri by a goal to nil courtesy of Ahmed Musa’s late strike while Sunshine Stars also bounced back from away embarrassment to secure a home win via Promise Awosanmi’s late winner.
