Junior Female Yellow Greens’ head coach, Sarah Bakhita, has commended her team for their outstanding performance at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
The team made history by becoming the first Nigerian female cricket team to qualify for the World Cup. They went on to break more records, defeating New Zealand and advancing to the Super Six stage.
Although their match against England was disrupted by rain, the team bounced back to defeat Ireland in their final game, securing third place in Group 2 of the Super Six.
Despite narrowly missing a semifinal spot, the Junior Female Yellow Greens earned national pride and won the hearts of global supporters with their impressive exploits.

Speaking after the win against Ireland, Sarah Bakhita rued the impact of the bad weather which led to the cancellation of two games, including the clash against England: “Bad weather did not give us an opportunity to fight and get to the semifinals but all in all we take all the positives and potentially finishing fifth or sixth in the World Cup is no joke.”
Bakhita also congratulated the team, stressing that the experience of playing at the World Cup will be valuable for them going forward: “I’d like to say congratulations to team Nigeria. The girls have done exceptionally well, they have fought through, they have believed , they have enjoyed and once they enjoy the experience, they will want to get back stronger.”
“We are just grateful for the exposure. We are grateful for this big stage. We are grateful that everything worked out together for our good. I feel like we can go back home champions having made a statement to the world that Nigeria has big potentials going forward,” Bakhita added.
By finishing in the top six, Nigeria’s Under-19 Women’s team have also earned an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 World Cup, where they will be hoping to make even more history and create more exciting memories.
