Atalanta are lining up a possible replacement for forward Ademola Lookman before the close of the January transfer window after the Nigeria international suffered a knee injury that might keep him on the sidelines for a while.

The news of the injury was announced on Tuesday, a huge blow for La Dea’s UEFA Champions League final group stage

The current African Footballer of the Year award winner was left out of the travelling party for Atalanta’s final UEFA Champions League group phase clash against in-form Barcelona at the Estadi Olympic LIuis Companys on Wednesday night.

Only a win for Atalanta against Barcelona will guarantee them an automatic qualification into the round of 16, but either a draw or loss will see them fall into the round of 16 playoff pool.

According to reports making the rounds in Italy, the club is looking to salvage the situation with just a few days until the close of the transfer window to bring in a suitable short-term replacement for the Nigerian.

They have narrowed down the names of prospective players to replace the Nigeria international to three names which include – Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, Monza’s Daniel Maldini and Napoli’s Giacomo Raspadori.

Atalanta has been closely monitoring French U21 star, Rayan Cherki, for some time. They had previously prepared an offer of up to €30 million to acquire him from Lyon earlier in the transfer window. However, this move was temporarily halted due to strong competition from other European clubs.

The report also stated that the club might eventually not sign any player as Lookman’s replacement due to time constraints but might look inward and find a suitable player who will try to fill his boots before his return.
